History

Born and raised in South Africa during the Apartheid years. 4-5th generation South African Indian. He is extremely proud of his indentured labourer heritage that brought his ancestors to AfricaBlessed with the passion of his ancestors. Born in Laudium, Pretoria. Went to Laudium Secondary School and then onto the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg graduating in 1994 with an MBBCh. Went off to the UK to work in the NHS for a few years, worked as an Expedition Doctor in the Indonesian Rain Forest for 6 weeks. Married the gorgeous Sandra Price in 1997. He has been Blessed with always having extremely strong women in his life from his grandmothers, his mother and since they met, Sandra. They came to South Africa in 1998 and set up a successful General Practice surgery in the heart of Pretoria. He finished an LLB degree in South Africa in 2004,joined the Pretoria Bar, did his pupillage, successfully completed the National Bar and took up Chambers at New Court Chambers in Pretoria.

Went to do work some international medical work, medical doctor on an oil rig and commissioned to build the hospital on board the Kizomba B FPSO in South Korea in 2005’ish. Also part of the launch crew for the Kizomba B from South Korea to the Angola Basin off West Central Africa.

Back to South Africa practicing medicine and law from 2005 to November 2008. Becomes involved in the mining industry in late 2005. Founder of Staten Island Trading in 2006. SIT acquires a vested stake in 3 diamond mines in the North West Province of South Africa. Navin was appointed as a Director on the following mines

The developing litigation legal practice increased personal risk tremendously. The entrance into a very protected Diamond mining industry by a person of colour escalated the risks. A measurable escalation in security risk took place in 2007 and 2008, and it was in March 2008, following a massive escalation in risk that a decision was made to leave to Australia. They moved to Gympie Queensland in November 2008 and have made a home there.

2008 was the time of the Global Financial Crisis and led to some interesting challenges with all projects. Travel to and from Australia and South Africa became the normal with Navin having made over 50 trips between the countries since 2008. Litigation and mining have been the main reasons for the commute. Once the covid pandemic is over, it is expected that Navin and Sandra will travel between the countries frequently again.

After having initiated, defended and lost many interesting and academic banking cases in the South African jurisdiction from the various high court jurisdictions through to the Supreme Court. These in his personal capacity as litigant. These cases span an interesting array of legal cases and an endeavour is being made to make all available electronically through this website. He has also collected an incredible array of medicolegal cases that he has litigated. These cases cover many important medicolegal concepts from “Full Informed Consent” to battery vs medical negligence disputes.

Navin has immersed himself into the legal cauldron of Australian health law. Bullying within the Health Industry, Vexations Notifications, the complex regulatory system of medicine in Australia and Queensland, the PSR, AHPRA, the civil court system, the Federal Court system, the Anti-Discrimination Commission of Queensland, the Residential Aged Care Legislation, Medicare legislation, the Bankruptcy act and litigation. Navin lives by the affirmation “ I never lose. Either I win or I Learn.

Navin has a passion for education, acute medicine, medical and medico-legal education, medicolegal issues, social development, rural education funding, and leveraging the mining industry towards sustainable development, education funding and social empowerment.
