Areas of Practice

Emergency Medicine

The world of Medicine is ever growing and evolving, and we’re not just talking about complexity but also risk. With the consistent introduction of varying new risks and challenges , the opportunity for profit grows, but so does the complexity. That’s where we come in. Advising health professionals and institutions about risks, risk management, risk mitigation as seen from an Emergency Medicine practitioner in the trenches as well as a litigator across several jurisdictions.

Southern African mining projects

Navin has had a keen interest in the South African mining industry for over 15 years now. Being an environmentalist meant reconciling his involvement in the industry to be a force for equitable social development, empowerment of local communities, no-chemical mining, carbon reduction and elimination of heavy diesel processes, and with a central focus on mine rehabilitation and sustainable resource usage.

General Practice

Always challenging. Not Always rewarding, Always with huge risks. Dealing with Insurance Companies and Government agencies juxtaposed with patients who are litigious and have unrealistic expectations has pushed many good doctors out of practice or worse. Navin has worked as a GP for over 25 years on several continents. Understanding the complexities that GP’s face from regulatory issues, litigation issues, employment issues, Bullying, burnout, and many other demons that plague the profession, Navin is able to identify the issues quickly and offer options for ways forward.

rural education funding

A pet project - leveraging mining to fund rural education. Expanding the current rural education assistance provided is the objective. Using the Diamond Lakes Mine as an anchor project with a substantial percentage of profits going towards education funding. Navin will be challenging many colleagues, Doctors and Lawyers to contribute towards the Rural Education Funding Effort. The objective is to empower as many rural African children to achieve a better education as possible in a manner that is self sustainable and corporately funded.

Medico-legal Litigation

With extensive experience in litigation in South Africa and Queensland, Navin is able to advise and assist with case management of complex medico-legal cases. He also advises doctors independently of their indemnity insurers about their rights and protections as per their indemnity insurance contracts.

Complex Medical Decision making

When calamity and crisis occur in a medical setting, decision makers may be overwhelmed with medical terms, risks vs benefits, percentage success rates, weighing up the risks and benefits of complex and possibly deadly medical interventions, costs, liability for costs, EPOA responsibilities. Finding out that your child has leukaemia and there are 8 different types of treatment, all of which could kill them, several of which cost more that a million dollars USD, and your insurance is not prepared to pay for your choice of treatment, can cause stress beyond most peoples breaking points. Making complex decisions with regards to ceiling of care and end of life decisions for loved ones is complex and expensive. One stay in a coronary care unit and then ICU for a complex patient could easily cost over a million dollars. At times, unrealistic expectations and expensive interventions prolong death but have no bearing on improved quality of life. Many families have been bankrupted through massive medical bills, a situation that should have been avoided by sensible decision making and appropriate timely advice from someone who can comprehend the risks and advice objectively.

“Be Water, My Friend.
Empty your mind.
Be formless, shapeless, like water.
You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.
You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.
You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot.
Now water can flow or it can crash.
Be water, my friend.”
— Bruce Lee
